Roero DOCG Releases Map Designating “Grand Cru” Vineyards Throughout Territory
After 8 years in the making, the Roero Consorzio released the region’s Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MGA) or, simply put, the territory’s vineyard or “subzone” classification map that classifies top vineyard sites in Roero, the third Italian wine region to do so.
The map designates those areas best suited for the production of Nebbiolo and Arneis based on soil, climate, provenance, and other criteria with the purpose of aiding trade and consumers in understanding the quality wines of the region.
To be classified, a vineyard must be planted with at least 50% or Nebbiolo and/or Arneis, must be the top 2/3 of the hill, must have at least three producers making wine on the hill, and must be a minimum of 10 hectares.
“Similar to the cru classification in Barolo, Bordeaux, Germany, and elsewhere, we have developed a system of vineyard classification based on extensive tastings and research of the terroir and history throughout the region,” said President of the Roero Consorzio Francesco Monchiero. “It is another step forward for expressing uniqueness or Roero region and that we are among the top wines of both Piedmont and the world.”
Currently, a handful of Roero producers release a vineyard-designated Roero and/or Roero Arneis, but the number is expected to rise in the near future.
“We are very excited to have finally completed this project, the third region in Italy to successfully do so. After much deliberation, the map showcases the best potential growing sites for Nebbiolo and Arneis,” continued Monchiero. “We hope that the increased production of vineyard-specific wines will further perpetuate the Roero terroir.”
The Roero Consorzio released the official map to the public at the second annual Roero Days held in Milan on March 26-27, 2017 via a press conference.
